A 20-foot Mitsubishi gantry mill, shipped across the country
The cover story documented a recent success: calibration of a massive used Mitsubishi gantry mill, with a 20-foot X-axis and a 10-foot Y-axis, that had been shipped across the country to Schurman Machine, Inc of Ridgefield, WA.
Another technician handled initial setup. Larry advised throughout, then used a Mahr Federal electronic level to achieve straight and level motion and a Renishaw Laser Interferometer to verify the result, with the least precise axis reaching a tolerance of 0.0005 inch, which the magazine called "an impressive feat considering the machine's long journey."
Communication carried the job as much as the instruments did. Transparent dialogue about angular movements and potential errors gave the client a clear picture of the machine's capabilities and limits, so they could plan around them.
